U18WC: Evaluating Team USA’s Forwards

Coming into the tournament, it was thought Team USA would have a hard time scoring goals. The forward corps didn’t possess a ton of high-end skill players, but had a fair amount of grinders and hard-workers.

The U.S. may not have lit the world on fire offensively, but in each of its six games it scored more goals than the other team. Someone told me that’s how you win hockey games.

Coming up after the jump, an in-depth evaluation of each of Team USA’s 13 forwards from the 2011 IIHF World Men’s Under-18 Championship.

U18WC: Evaluating Team USA’s Defensemen and Goalies

The U.S. got inspired play out of it’s defensemen and goaltenders throughout the 2011 IIHF World Men’s Under-18 Championship. The defensive group was a big strength for Team USA, contributing offensively, but playing strong in their own end. Obviously the goaltending was a big strength with John Gibson carrying the load. Without him, it could have been different.

Let’s take a look at each goaltender and defenseman for the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team, 2011 IIHF World Under-18 Champion:

U18WC: Gold-Medal Game Recap

Some might say this edition of the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team is a squad that seemed to find a way or just do enough to win. Based on it’s last two games at the 2011 IIHF World Men’s Under-18 Championship, I view this team more as one that refused to lose.

On back-to-back nights, Team USA earned overtime victories. The first night it was a three-goal comeback by Team Canada to force overtime in the semifinal. The next, it was a two-goal comeback by the U.S. to earn a shot in overtime in the championship game. Both nights, Team USA came out on top.

Check out the rest of the recap after the jump and find out what makes this year’s gold medal so impressive.

For the second straight year, the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team will take on Sweden in the gold-medal game at the IIHF World Men’s Under-18 Championship. Last year’s tilt between the two was as entertaining a game as I’ve seen. Expect nothing less later today.

U18WC: USA-Canada Recap

If there was one word I continually uttered after the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team’s overtime win against Canada, it was wow. Team USA defeated Canada, 5-4, in overtime in the semifinals at the 2011 IIHF World Men’s Under-18 Championship. Tyler Biggs scored the game winner after Canada erased a 4-1 third-period deficit to force extra time.

It was a wild game, to put it about as mildly as possible.

Team USA went down 1-0 after a Brett Ritchie power-play tip-in. J.T. Miller tied the game after he blocked a Ryan Murphy shot and went down the right-wing and fired a wrister through Malcolm Subban’s legs.

In the second, Team USA looked to be in control, pouring 21 shots on goal. The U.S. was only able to muster one goal, as Reid Boucher notched his sixth of the tournament with his trademark top-right snipe from the left faceoff circle.

In the third, the game initially looked in control as Team USA scored twice shorthanded… on the same penalty. Zac Larraza broke down the right side and rifled a wrister into the top-right corner as Subban could only wave at the puck. Shortly thereafter, Miller won a clean faceoff to Boucher, who just threw the puck on net. It caromed off of Subban’s stick and in. Not the prettiest goal, but the U.S. was more than happy to take it.

Despite the three-goal deficit Canada never gave up and kept plugging away. Eventually, the Canadians netted the game-tying goal with just 51 seconds remaining in regulation. It looked like the momentum had officially shifted.

Tyler Biggs put an end to that after John Gibson blockered a Ryan Murphy shot that found its way to Biggs. The power forward streaked down the right wing and put a hard wrist shot into the bottom left corner ending the game. It was a great shot and a big goal for one of the leaders on the U.S. team.

Biggs had struggled in the preliminary round, but looked solid against Canada. I think the goal against Canada was a bit of vindication and should give the big forward a some confidence going into the gold-medal game. That will be a big boost for Team USA.

John Gibson, despite the late-game comeback was solid. Three of Canada’s four goals were on the power play and the last was with an extra attacker. He stopped 38 shots. Gibson probably thinks he could be better, but he’s still the winning goalie and made several key saves early when it looked like Canada was pushing the pace.

I think Team USA feels pretty fortunate to have come out of that game with a win, but at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is scoring more than the other team. I’m sure there will be a few adjustments made and a few meetings had to address the late-game comeback, but all-in-all the U.S. needs to play its own game against a very talented Sweden team.

Hats off to Canada for a gutsy effort. That was a serious comeback there. They just never went away, but couldn’t score the last goal.

Sorry for the short post, but we’ve got a quick turnaround. I’ll have a full preview up tomorrow morning.

U18WC: Quarterfinal Recap, Brief Look Ahead

After Thursday night’s games, just four teams remain in the hunt for the gold medal at the 2011 IIHF World Men’s Under-18 Championship. Russia defeated Finland, 5-2, while Canada squeaked past Germany, 4-3.

Russia will meet Sweden at 2:30 p.m. (8:30 a.m. EDT) and Canada will take on the U.S. at 6:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. EDT). Needless to say, the four best teams in this tournament are still playing. In my opinion, that’s as it should be.

Coming up after the jump, a look at both quarterfinal match-ups and a brief look ahead.

For the first time since 2006, Team USA finds itself idle during the quarterfinal round. Having earned a bye with a 4-0-0-0 record at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship, the U.S. can breathe a little easy today.

The same can’t be said for Canada, Germany, Finland and Russia. All four will compete for a spot in the semis. Russia takes on Finland this afternoon, with the winner meeting Sweden in the semifinal. Canada and Germany go head-to-head tonight to decide who will meet Team USA.

U18WC: USA-Germany Preview

The U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team will meet Germany tonight in its final preliminary-round game at the IIHF World Men’s Under-18 Championship. Team USA can breathe a little easier tonight, as it is already guaranteed the top spot in Group A and has locked up a bye to the semifinals.

The bye came thanks to a 4-0 loss by Germany at the hands of already relegation-round bound Slovakia. This is the first bye for Team USA since the 2006 World U18s, when it won its second consecutive gold medal with a team that included Patrick Kane, Erik Johnson and Blake Geoffrion, among others.

Coming up after the jump, today’s playoff implications in Group A and a preview of USA-Germany.
