USA vs. Sweden Recap: Who Stood Out, Who Didn’t and What We Learned

A roster made up of candidates for the U.S. National Junior Team skated away with a 3-2 overtime victory over Team Sweden today in its first pre-World Junior Championship tune-up. The game was expected to be an important evaluation point for Team USA as it still has three cuts to make by Dec. 22.

Logo_USA_hockeyAfter today’s contest, in which all of the players on the bubble for the final roster played, it’s going to be an even tougher decision than previously thought.

The U.S. scratched its two top defensemen coming into the tournament in Seth Jones and Jacob Trouba, its projected top line of Johnny Gaudreau, J.T. Miller and Rocco Grimaldi, and its starting goalie John Gibson. Sweden played most of their big guns like Hampus Lindholm, Elias Lindholm, Filip Forsberg and Sebastian Collberg. To come away with a 3-2 win in a penalty-filled game is a good result for the United States.

More than anything, it gives Team USA’s staff a really strong evaluation point to see who fits where. The only problem now is, who can they cut? Your guess is probably as good as mine. It’s only three guys, but I do not envy that staff right now.

Team USA Lineup vs. Sweden — Notes and Analysis

The U.S. will meet Sweden in its first of two pre-tournament games today at 12:30 p.m. ET. The game will air live on NHL Network (no NHL.com stream though). This game will be the crucial evaluation point for the guys on the bubble for Team USA. What happens today could have a big impact on who the final 23 guys going to Ufa will be.

Team USA’s lineup for today’s game came out just a bit ago.

Team USA will dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen today, which is two less than normal. The six scratches are all guys that are locked into spots on Team USA. Going with two less players will ensure that all of the guys the U.S. needs to see more of will get plenty of ice time.

Coming up after the jump, the lines, the scratches and some analysis.

USA vs. Sweden — What to Watch for in Team USA’s First Exhibition

USA Hockey will take a significant step in narrowing down its U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster when the squad meets Sweden for its first pre-tournament game Thurday. The U.S. will dress the requisite 22 players for the game, which will air live on NHL Network at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Logo_USA_hockeyTeam USA GM Jim Johannson has said Thursday’s game will be a big part of the decision process for the three cuts USA Hockey will have to make to get down to 23 players for the tournament. Two defensemen and a forward will have to be let go by Dec. 22, which is when the roster is planned to be announced.

The series of practices Team USA has held, with small area games and informal scrimmages will have weighed heavily into consideration on top of the players’ complete bodies of work. For those on the bubble, Thursday could be make or break. For the guys that are safe from the clippers, it will be a chance to build chemistry and familiarity with linemates.

Coming up after the jump, what to watch for during Team USA’s exhibition.

VIDEO: Alex Galchenyuk’s Five-Point Game Before World Juniors

Alex Galchenyuk

Alex Galchenyuk is going to be an offensive key for the U.S. National Junior Team at the World Junior Championship. He has elite skills, good size and is in the midst of an other-worldly season in the Ontario Hockey League.

Just before Galchenyuk left for Team USA’s pre-tournament camp, his Sarnia Sting met the Kingston Frontenacs. In what the U.S. will hope to be a sign of things to come over in Ufa next week, Galchenyuk absolutely went off with three goals and two assists (indluding one to probable Team USA teammate Connor Murphy).

Here’s all five points in video form…

The five-point game capped an eight-point weekend for the Montreal Canadiens top pick, who was named both the Ontario Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League Player of the Week.

Galchenyuk is second in OHL scoring with 61 points, trailing Ryan Strome by one, while his 27 goals are tied for the league high.

I have a feeling USA Hockey is pretty glad this guy was born in Milwaukee. The Good Land, indeed.

U.S. World Junior Watch: Team USA’s Wonderful Conundrum on D

The U.S. has about as good a problem as you could hope to have when it comes to its defense. No matter which two of the nine defensemen in camp get cut, the reaction is probably going to be like this: “How could they possibly have cut him?”

The depth among the nine blueliners in camp is notable. There’s a good mix of skill sets, but the key similarity is mobility. All of the guys in camp can move well. Not all of them are speedsters, but every single guy is strong on his feet. Knowing that, it’s the other tools that each guy brings to the table that will ultimately decide his fate.

What is going to be extremely tough for the U.S. to decide now that the camp is headed to Finland, is which seven guys give them the right mix. Based on reports coming out of camp, it’s going to take a little longer to figure out who that might be.

Coming up after the jump, a look at Team USA’s options….

U.S. World Junior Watch: Experimenting with Line Combos, Links

Today marks the final on-ice session for Team USA at the MSG Training Center in New York. All 26 players left in camp will be hopping a plane to Finland for the rest of the camp in Helsinki, where the expanded roster will play two exhibition games against Sweden and Finland and hold another series of practices. Only three cuts will have to be made, but the decisions are going to be as tough as ever.

Logo_USA_hockeyThe last few days in camp haven’t revealed a bunch about Team USA, but there has certainly been some experimentation with the lines. The loss of Stefan Noesen, who Phil Housley told NHL.com would have certainly been on the team, makes for some more difficult planning, particularly in the top six.

Coming up after the jump, a look at some of the lineup options being explored by Team USA, links and more.

NHL Network to Air, NHL.com to Stream All U.S. Games Live

If you don’t mind waking up early, NHL Network and USA Hockey today announced that the Network will be airing all Team USA games live throughout the U.S. Additionally, NHL.com will stream the U.S. games live, so you’re covered if you do’t have the Network and live in the United States.

In addition to all USA games, NHL Network will air 12 other games including each of Canada’s preliminary-round games, both quarterfinals, both semifinals and both the bronze and gold-medal games, regardless of U.S. participation. Also, for those hard-core individuals out there, NHL Network is airing each of Team USA’s two pre-tournament games.

Steve Mears, Penguins radio play-by-play man, will be calling the action, while NHL.com/NHL Network’s E.J. Hradek will provide color. Rob Simpson returns for the second straight year to provide rink-side coverage.

NHL.com/NHL Network will also be utilizing Adam Kimelman and Mike Morreale from NHL.com, as well as Dave Starman (who has done color for this tournament for the last several years) for in-depth analysis.

The good news for fans is that you can follow the coverage. The bad news is, you have to get up at some seriously ungodly hours to do so live. Each tournament game will be replayed at a more reasonable hour, but if you love this tournament, you’re getting up, right?

I’ll be getting up with you, providing game previews, recaps and in-game analysis on Twitter. So please keep me company.

U.S. World Junior Watch: More Thoughts on Noesen, Team USA’s Options

Team USA now knows that it will head to Ufa without Ottawa first-rounder Stefan Noesen. The big right winger leaves a void not easily filled, but the U.S. has some good options in camp and will not be adding any other players to the preliminary roster.

Stefan Noesen (OHL)

Getting back to the IIHF decision however, it was interesting that in USA Hockey’s statement, Dave Ogrean, the executive director for the organization said he didn’t feel the IIHF’s process was “equitable.” It’s a very interesting deviation from previous USA Hockey releases, often uncontroversial and simply the facts.

The IIHF has a history of being inconsistent in its decisions, sometimes getting overly technical with its interpretation of its own rules. While the details on why it chose to keep Noesen out are still mostly unknown, this isn’t the first time USA Hockey has been burned by the IIHF this year.

UPDATE: Stefan Noesen Ruled Ineligible for WJC by IIHF

Stefan Noesen tweeted this morning that he is leaving Team USA’s camp.  It appears the IIHF has ruled him ineligible for the 2013 World Junior Championship due to his still outstanding 10-game suspension in the Ontario Hockey League. USA Hockey has not officially commented on Noesen’s status yet.

UPDATED: USA Hockey has officially announced that the IIHF has ruled Noesen ineligible for the 2013 World Junior Championship.

From USA Hockey:

Noesen, who plays for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League, was suspended for 10 games by the OHL for a hit in a game on Dec. 8. The IIHF recognizes suspensions from certified leagues in member federations and because there will be seven games remaining in Noesen’s suspension prior to the start of the IIHF World Junior Championship, Noesen will not be eligible for participate in the tournament.

“While we respect the IIHF’s decision, we don’t feel the process is equitable,” said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. “Moving forward, we’ll work with the IIHF and other federations to address the situation.”

Noesen was suspended for what the OHL deemed an illegal hit on Dec. 8. He is eligible to return to OHL play on Jan. 11. As a result, via IIHF By-Law 302, Noesen would have had to miss the majority of Team USA’s games at the WJC as the rule states: “Player suspensions will apply to participation in both ice hockey and In-line hockey competitions irrespective of the competition in which the offence giving rise to the suspension occurred.”

Team USA Jim Johannson told reporters yesterday, “We’re working on it as best we can. It takes a lot of communication with a lot of people right now. It’s a little bit of uncharted territory for everybody. All I can say is I’m working on it as hard as I can. And I’ve been happy with the cooperation but it’s a difficult position for everybody and everyone involved is giving it the right diligence right now.”
